Hi everyone. My name is Sandra, Iā€™m from MĆ©xico and Iā€™d like to share a bit of my experience as a participant at the bootcamp.

These past few weeks have been an incredible introduction to the blockchain world. Our mentors are women and men from diverse backgrounds who have shared their knowledge and experience, presenting insightful materials and supporting us even after our scheduled sessions.

As someone pursuing a degree online, I cannot stress enough how valuable spaces like Women in Web3 are. Like Lali said, the sense of community and support weā€™ve created has surpassed anything I could have imagined. The way everyone is willing to share, collaborate, and help each other out has been super inspiring.

Iā€™d also like to point out that spaces like Women in Web3 are not just important; they are essential. Here in Latin America, where women remain underrepresented in tech, I truly believe programs like WiW3 play a crucial role in leveling the field by empowering us to pursue careers in this industry no matter our age, background, or location.

Big big thanks to the Women Biz team @criptomommy for their amazing work. The dedication and love theyā€™ve put into creating this program has shown, and their commitment and mentorship are invaluable.

Hello! My name is Catherine. I am a geography and lover of technology in all its forms and dimensions. These weeks have been very intense seeing topics such as Wallet, cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin, Ethereum, DeFi, decentralized governance, and much more. I joined the ā€œWomen in Web3ā€ bootcamp because I am a techie. I am also pursuing a masterā€™s degree in Geographic Information Technologies. I have worked for the leading Asian GIS company, which used blockchain in its software and I would like to continue learning much more about the subject. What I liked most is meeting a huge community of people in blockchain, which is growing more and more. I am passionate about learning and teaching technology. This week I was excited to discover new wallets, different from the ones I have already tried. The most challenging task I have had so far was designing my own fungible and non-fungible Tokens. PS, I am fascinated by POAPs, since visually they are beautiful.

Hi Katie,

I had not read your post but wanted to share some thoughts. Although the concept of crypto is founded on principles of inclusivity, the reality often falls short of this ideal. I also do want to note that even though her community is called WomenBiz, Brigid hosts events that cater to both men and women throughout the year.

This bootcamp is designed to address two key challenges: language barriers and the gender gap within the industry. Research indicates that women occupy around 26% of all crypto-related jobs, and only approximately 6% hold top leadership positions, with a significant gender disparity at the CEO level where 94% are male. I donā€™t know if you have seen this recent research by the Association Women in Crypto: Association for Women in Cryptocurrency on LinkedIn: Association for Women in Cryptocurrency Inaugural Report Finds Noteworthyā€¦ | 14 comments

Personally, I have also experienced the positive impact of providing safe spaces for women can have. Anecdotally I have also seen this impact. Recently we announced a workshop tailored for women, and several asked that we do not include men as they did not feel as comfortable asking questions. This was not initially our plan but opted to respect this request. We had 50 women actively engaged, when in previous sessions we had less women participate, and less engagement. I prefer to host twice as many events, some only for women, if these are going to help us close the gender gap.

I am a firm believer that initiatives like this bootcamp, along with others like Shefiā€™s program and Surge Women, aim to bridge this gender gap and create a more inclusive environment. Specialized programs like these play a crucial role in attracting and empowering more women in the crypto space.

However, I agree that further research is necessary, and ultimately, our goal should be to continue to build programs that foster unity and inclusivity across the board. Yet, I believe that initiatives like this bootcamp are necessary and have a positive impact in advancing towards the overarching goal of inclusivity within the crypto community. Thank you for engaging, this is a very important discussion and happy to connect at any time to discuss how we help achieve this vision.

Super cool to read all these stories about the impact this project is having on so many lives and how many new brains are tuning in to whatā€™s happening

Also interesting to see how many men are on the ā€œteachers and mentorsā€ list on the bootcamp website, and to learn that WomenBiz hosts events open to men. Makes me think of the projectā€™s purpose as less about exclusion and more about creating another north star to focus collective energy.

It seems like every new north star produces another puzzle piece to the overall picture of what crypto is really doing for society. Interested to see what pieces emerge from this and fit them into my own limited view of the big picture. I always seem to get a boost of inspiration and creativity when a new one comes along. Stuff I hadnā€™t - and couldnā€™t have - thought about on my own. Good times.

@MonicaTalan - I find it interesting that the two stats youā€™ve chosen to include are about jobs and leadership positions. I fully realize those are relevant to the current state of crypto as we transition from legacy systems, but my idealistic/optimistic hope is that ā€œjobsā€ (especially ā€œleadership positionsā€) are something we can evolve beyond. Honestly, if we donā€™t, I will likely consider the whole thing a failure.

I went down the rabbit hole a bit on the link you dropped and found this quote from Vernā Myers, the head of inclusion at Netflix -

"Diversity is being invited to the party,
inclusion is being asked to dance.ā€

My question is, what if the party sucks? Do you even want an invite?

Love this ā€œMakes me think of the projectā€™s purpose as less about exclusion and more about creating another north star to focus collective energyā€.

Great observation on data, maybe these are Web2 metrics. Honest question, what data do you think we should be looking at?

And yes, we donā€™t want to be at every party, that is where the transparency comes in, understanding the type of party or dance. Thanks for the questions and engagement.

Hi everyone! Iā€™m Navy, and Iā€™m so excited to be here today to share my journey into the fascinating world of web3. I started out as a data analyst and SEO product manager, but my curiosity about blockchain technology turned into a full-blown passion. This passion led me to participate in the amazing Women in Web3 bootcamp by Women Biz. I learned about all sorts of innovative tools that are shaping the future of the internet, from digital wallets that give us more control over our finances to NFTs that are revolutionizing the way we own and interact with digital assets. We also explored platforms like Mirror and Paragraph that are making it easier for anyone to create and share content directly on the blockchain. One of the most valuable aspects of my web3 journey has been connecting with the incredible community. I had the privilege of participating in forums hosted by Optimism, a leading blockchain platform. The more I learn about web3, the more excited I become about its potential to create a more inclusive and innovative future. Blockchain technology has the power to transform the way we interact with the internet, giving us more control over our data and creating new opportunities for ownership and participation. Itā€™s a good question. Iā€™m not sure I have a good answer, but Iā€™ll share some thoughts that have emerged for me, maybe it moves something for you and/or others.

My first thought was ā€œyou make what you measureā€ which begs the question, what do we want to make? Everyoneā€™s got their own answer, but since weā€™re talking about diversity and inclusion statisticsā€¦

As far as I understand it, the intent behind diversity and inclusion seems to be about distributing the ability for individuals to affect change on reality - make decisions, earn money, influence the culture, learn things, etc. - across a broad audience with a wide range of experiences. We want to make the world we live in more balanced, more reflective of the wants/needs/desires of the many rather than the few.

If anyone thinks thatā€™s wrong or incomplete, I am very interested in feedback. Assuming for the moment thatā€™s close enough to play with, it is extremely aligned with my understanding of the intent behind web3. Collectively we might label the ability to affect change on reality as ā€œpowerā€ (though Iā€™m not stoked about that word since it carries some cultural baggage). Everyone has some amount of power by this definition, but on the whole of humanity there is a huge disparity.

Some of the ways web3 is distributing power are through open currency design and issuance, codified group decision making, asynchronous/semi-autonomous workflows, and cultural evolution. Thereā€™s probably a lot more and these four themselves could be extensively unpacked, but Iā€™m just spitballing here.

Since weā€™re in the middle of legacy ā†’ web3 transition it might make more sense to try and conceptualize some kind of end game for crypto to consider for data/metrics - since this will influence how and what we build - rather than just looking at where we are today. Thereā€™s a bit of a catch-22 here though, since we want everyone to weigh in on that end game vision. Otherwise weā€™re just repeating old problems where a handful of people make decisions that affect everyone.

Maybe what the current ā€œweā€ needs to measure is the distribution of voice and how it translates to actions. Maybe the data for voice is in social graphs, community participation, DAO votes, token holders, etc. Quantity is straightforward to measure, but to figure out how well voice translates to action would require sifting out some kind of summaries or context. Then we could look at github projects, grant allocations, DAO proposals and things like that to see how reflective actions are of voice.

Some questions I will be thinking about:

  • What constitutes ā€œvoiceā€ in web3?
  • What is the current distribution of voice?
  • How can the distribution be improved?
  • What does ā€œimproved distributionā€ mean?
  • What is the correlation between the content of voice and implemented actions?

I wrote whatā€™s above yesterday and saw something to add. Crypto obscures demographic information by design. Thereā€™s certainly some digging one can do to get a sense of things, but since anti-sybil technology that preserves privacy is moving along fast and since weā€™re working in the digital sphere where we can put 4 billion perspectives in the same interface, maybe it makes more sense to just measure how many anti-sybil accounts exist (if half of the world has one itā€™s probably pretty diverse, if all of the world has one itā€™s as diverse as possible) and then focus on their ā€œvoiceā€ data and how it translates to actions.

One last thing I want to share on the ā€œpotential harmā€ topic. Curious to hear any feedback on this. Itā€™s by no means thoroughly researched (maybe the poo emojis give that away), just my intuition from talking with lots of people about it over the years. Particularly interested to hear from @katie and/or @0xDonPepe if yā€™all have anything to add.

Ya Iā€™m not trying to get into a philosophical debate. Iā€™m a ā€œwoman in cryptoā€ and I made it here on my own. Creating identity based programs is antithetical to the whole ethos of crypto, creating a solution for a problem that doesnā€™t really exist, and also slightly insulting imo. But we can agree to disagree, itā€™s all good.

Hi Optimism Collective:

Iā€™m Sara HernĆ”ndez. I am currently enrolled in the Women in Web3 Bootcamp, an incredible initiative created by the Women Biz community. During the class led by @criptomommy I was introduced to the Optimism Collective and its governance structure, which sparked my interest and inspired me to share my learning.

Optimism: A Blockchain Governance Tool with Social Impact

Optimism stands out as an online governance tool within the blockchain technology landscape. It emerges as a potential solution to the persistent and growing challenges that humanity faces, such as unequal and unsatisfactory access to basic societal needs like food, water, and housing. Additionally, Optimism addresses the crucial issue of upholding and respecting human rights.
As a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO), Optimism operates through a Collective and a Network, utilizing a governance plan to make decisions regarding resource allocation. To implement a project within a DAO, it undergoes three distinct phases:

  1. Proposal: The project idea is formally introduced and outlined for consideration.
  2. Voting: Community members cast their votes to determine whether to support or reject the proposed project.
  3. Implementation: Upon approval, the approved project is put into action and executed.

The voting process in Optimism is safeguarded by various mechanisms, including automation, transparency, and resistance to censorship. These measures ensure the integrity and fairness of the voting system, preventing manipulation and ensuring that the voice of the community is heard.

At the heart of Optimismā€™s new economy lies a cycle that generates revenue, fosters network growth, and drives progress towards the organizationā€™s mission. Revenue is primarily generated through transaction fees, with a portion allocated to the public goods infrastructure.

Optimism adopts an IMPACT = BENEFIT approach to project selection. This framework involves evaluating a projectā€™s potential impact and assigning retroactive funding based on its historical performance. Additionally, existing projects are regularly reviewed and assessed for their continued relevance and effectiveness.

The Citizen House plays a crucial role in allocating resources to community projects, aligning with the Collectiveā€™s vision. Meanwhile, the Token House oversees network improvements, incentives, and treasuries, prioritizing the preservation of decentralization.

These two chambers, the Citizen House and the Token House, maintain the networkā€™s equilibrium through their respective functions, voting mechanisms, and veto power. This collaborative governance structure ensures that both the communityā€™s interests and the networkā€™s overall health are taken into account.

In summary, the Optimism ecosystem serves as an inspiring example of how decentralized collaboration and community engagement can drive innovation and progress in the blockchain space. With its scalability and efficiency features, Optimism is playing a vital role in transforming and expanding the Ethereum ecosystem, paving the way towards a more decentralized and accessible future for all.

I am committed to a continuous learning journey within the Optimism ecosystem and Iā€™m eager to explore various contribution opportunities, including ambassador and translator roles. I am excited to be a part of this vibrant community and contribute my skills and passion to its growth and success.

Thank you for reading!
