[Mission Request] Intent 3A - Superchain Builder Hub

Mission Request Summary

Delegate Mission Request Summary: To reduce information asymmetry and misalignment costs, create a virtual hub covering all Optimism Collective activities and stakeholders. The platform should cover chains, projects, opportunities, programs, analytics, and contributors.

S6 Intent: Intent 3A: Grow Application Developers on the Superchain

Proposing Delegate/Citizen: Sov

Total grant amount: 125K OP
Should this Mission be fulfilled by one or multiple applicants: One

How will this Mission Request help accomplish the above Intent?
The main costs of coordination include communication costs (e.g., time to align parties and information asymmetry) and alignment costs (e.g., avoiding duplicate efforts and conflicting priorities).

To improve coordination in the Optimism Collective, we propose funding the development and operation of a virtual hub covering all its areas. By providing an up-to-date and accurate representation of chains, projects, programs, and contributors, we greatly increase the ability of any new developer or organization to contextualize and provide value in the most effective way possible.

Some other ecosystems, such as Arbitrum have advanced portals that highlight the top chains, projects and resources and hubs to highlight organization structures.

We believe Optimism will be able to attract the best talent and builders if it’s easy to find and understand all activities taking place in the ecosystem.

What is required to execute this Mission Request?

  • An operating team with a deep understanding of the Optimism Collective.
  • A platform that aligns with Optimism brand guidelines and ethos.
  • A complete overview of all OP Chains.
  • An overview of all projects deployed on OP Chains.
  • Insights and updates on the programs operated in the Optimism Collective.
  • An overview of Optimism Collective contributors, including Citizens, Delegates, and Council members.
  • A clear path to learning about the Optimism Collective and discovering all the technical and non-technical resources available.
  • Standardized and trustworthy reporting to showcase the utility of the platform.

How should governance participants measure impact upon completion of this Mission?

This MR can be separated into the following phases and milestones.

Design stage (6 weeks): Milestone #1: Define all features and priorities for the Superchain Builder Hub.
Milestone #2: Create a prototype for the platform and test it with future users to ensure all essential elements are covered and easy to find

Development stage (6 weeks): Milestone #3: Develop the first version of the platform.
Milestone #4: Fill the platform with all relevant e last and upcoming Seaso informationns.

Operation Stage (24 weeks): Milestone #4: Operate the platform for the first 8 weeks and publish a progress report including all platform statistics, improvements, and KPIs,
Milestone #5: Operate the platform for the second 8 weeks and publish a progress report including all platform statistics, improvements and KPIs
Milestone #6: Operate the platform for the final8 weeks and publish a progress report including all platform statistics, improvements and KPIs,

The following metrics should be used to measure this MR against:

  • Number of builders forwarded to Optimism Collective programs such as The Sunny Awards, RetroPGF, and Season 6 Missions.
  • Number of developers referred to job opportunities at Optimism Collective chains or projects through the platform.
  • Number of projects joining the RetroPGF list as a result of outreach by the platform.
  • Number of new delegates referred through the platform
  • Number of mission grantees referred through the platform
  • Number of new citizens referred through the platform
  • Number of unique users engaging with the platform
  • Number of unique users referred through the platform
  • Total gas used by platform users
  • Total reach of the platform

The impact of the mission can be measured best by:

  • Number of projects joining the RetroPGF list as a result of outreach by the platform.
  • Number of new delegates referred through the platform
  • Number of unique users referred through the platform
  • Total gas used by platform users

Has anyone other than the proposer contributed to this Mission Request?
To be updated

Which metric will the success of this Mission Request be evaluated against?
The North star metric against which this Mission Request should be evaluated is # of transactions emitting event logs, as it tracks the aggregated onchain activity that this program facilitates.

Kindly tagging some Mission reviewers to get some early feedback and potential sponsorship

I think this is something someone should try to build first before soliciting grants – we’ve gotten so so many applications to do just this and the only way to get signal to noise is to see some actual evidence of building

great candidate for retro funding

Thanks for the proposal, @LuukDAO.

I see some overlap between this proposal and the mission request from @AnthiasLabs ([Mission Request] Interactive Map of the Optimism Ecosystem). I am also aware of other potential MRs in development that have overlap.

A good place to start would be consolidating some of these threads. There seems to be some support for this idea, but we need to show a system’s value and impact before it can be aligned with an MR.

Hello all, Binji from Optimism Unlimited here.

This feels like a wonderful proposal to help expand the visibility of the Superchain to builders and users alike, we think it would be good to stay in tandem with other relevant stakeholders to prevent repeat work, and make things complimentary to one another. Recommend reaching out to the unlimited team to see where efforts can be cross pollinated as this develops. Overall, I think it would be valuable for the token house to support a grant like this and Unlimited would be happy to coordinate to see where efforts can be merged. The SuperchainEco team has contirbuted heavily to the collective wether it be through events or online surfaces and this feels like an exciting next step.

The views I express are my own and do not necessarily reflect those of the entirety of Optimism Unlimited.

We completely agree that it’s critical to have building / use evidence before investing further resources @jackanorak. We took this approach when we started Superchain Eco over a year ago. Since, our platform has attracted nearly 10K unique users, over 38K visits and nearly 750K reach on X - an overview of our analytics can be found here.

The Superchain Builder Hub Mission request is critical for ensuring a well-resourced and capable team can coordinate ecosystem resources efficiently and remain focussed solely on the Superchain.

In our case, the only funding we received was RetroPGF3 rewards, which ran out in Q2. While we’re big fans of RetroPGF, the unpredictable nature of the participation requirements post RetroPGF3 makes it extremely challenging to allocate resources effectively. We didn’t qualify for round 3 due to not being a smart contract solution, and we are unsure what the inclusion requirements for the upcoming Governance Round are. If we don’t get anything in that round, we will have to go additional months without any funding, which we can’t sustain forever and will impact productivity.

Based on our growing numbers (see analytics), we feel the right step is to improve the platform and grow the team, but we’ll need some certainty (through a Mission grant e.g.) to take that step.

We believe having a hub will greatly reduce information and coordination costs, while also creating a primary distribution platform for Superchain created resources that aren’t suitable for the main optimism.io platform. A great example is the Superchain Eco project overview, which the primary Optimism.io website already points to (when clicking on Apps).

To @binji-optimism’s point, we believe a Hub should maintain close relationships with Optimism Unlimited and other Optimism Collective teams to ensure effective collaboration and avoiding unwanted overlap.

To @Sov’s point, we saw the Mission requested and left a comment - as our platform already includes an MVP of each of the elements mentioned, and with our existing users - we believe it would make sense to improve those MVPs instead of having a team create and host these resources in a separate location.

A proper Hub team should consist of at least 2 researchers/comms, 1 developer, and a designer. The proposed MR budget would not cover the entire year of that team, so RetroPGF would continue to be relevant and something to align with!

Hopefully one of the Grant committee member sees sufficiency merit in this Mission and approach to sponsor it and move toward Collective vote!

Thanks for this @LuukDAO and @binji-optimism - appreciate the perspectives and additional information.

I will sponsor this as a member of the grants council. I have already been working on a similar concept, a Superchain “map”. I was planning to form this into an independent MR but would like to sponsor what is proposed here and explore if elements of this may be folded in.

Hi @Gonna.eth - after Sov’s comment, I updated the title of this thread and added his name to the thread. Is that enough, or should we still take another step to have this MR proposal added to the upcoming batch?
