[Looking for Sponsor] Strengthen the initial stages of attracting devs for the Superchain through open source contributions

This mission aims to streamline the onboarding process for new developers joining the Optimism collective, with the goals of enhancing learning, facilitate team building, and serving as a bridge to larger Optimism grants and RPGF opportunities. Currently, the Optimism collective lacks a more accessible entry point that complements its existing funding model. We want to encourage new developers to explore the ecosystem, which will incentivize them to fully commit to building on it. By onboarding top talent, we expect them to transition into dapp builders. This approach could double the retention rate of new developers within the ecosystem.

S6 Intent
3: Grow Application Devs on the Superchain

What metric are you trying to improve with these OP incentives?
Primary = growth of active addresses interacting with grantee’s contracts
Secondary = stickiness: % of retained active addresses interacting with grantee’s contracts

Total grant amount
300 000 OP - to onboard 200 devs in 12 months

How will this Mission Request help accomplish the above Intent?
This mission request will help achieve the Grow Application Devs on the Superchain intent by significantly increasing the volume of new developers onboarding the Optimism ecosystem. This will allow the ecosystem to identify high-potential dev talents by enhancing learning, facilitating team building, and acting as a bridge to larger Optimism grants and RPGF opportunities. This initiative will also increase the retention rate of new onboarded developers.

What is required to execute this Mission Request?

The proposed Mission request will last for 12 months:

  1. Identify top Optimism projects
  2. Help the identified projects to get visibility through different initiatives (monthly community meetups + monthly community calls)
  3. Use 40-50% of the requested budget to reward projects’ maintainers investing their time in onboarding new developers
  4. Use the rest of the budget to reward new contributors for their merged PR on the selected repos
  5. Create momentum by creating monthly Open Source Week where contributors can get to know the projects and contribute to them
  6. Monitor results to provide the Collective with a clear developer acquisition cost + visibility on projects onboarding the most developers + top talent onboarded

How should governance participants measure impact upon completion of this Mission Request?

Governance participants can measure the impact of this mission request by tracking the following metrics:

  1. Volume of new developers onboarded (PR merged)
  2. Volume of grant distributed (the requested grant amount will be directly redistributed to new onboarded devs and projects’ maintainers)
  3. Number of contributors participating in the Open Source week
  4. Number of community meetups organized
  5. Number of community calls organized

Milestones:

  1. Identify the selected projects
  2. Connect with the maintainers
  3. Host monthly Open Source week with Optimism projects
  4. Host monthly community call with Optimism projects
  5. Host monthly community meetups to promote the Optimism Collective

Impact and Metrics:

  1. How many new dev merged PRs
  2. How many projects onboarded more dans 10 devs
  3. How many of the onboarded devs are still in the ecosystem after 3 months

Has anyone other than the proposer contributed to this Mission Request?
No

Which metric will the success of this Mission Request be evaluated against?
The primary metric for evaluating this Mission Request will be the number of new developers onboarded to the Optimism Ecosystem. Additionally, the exact cost of acquiring each developer should be provided to the Collective.
