Seeking Mission Request Sponsorship

OP Stack Research and Implementation

Delegate Mission Request Summary

This mission request is designed to enable the developer community to contribute to the core OP Stack by engaging in research and implementation on various topics. Since this is a research problem, itā€™s possible that this may fail. In such cases, grantees are required to open source their implementation and create follow-up documentation that details the reasons for failure and any obstacles encountered. This approach ensures that even unsuccessful attempts contribute to the collective knowledge and progress of the OP Stack community.

S5 Intent: Intent 1 - Progress towards technical decentralization

Start date: February 1st 2024
Completion date: February 1st 2025

Specification:

How will this Delegate Mission Request help accomplish the above intent?
Currently, OP Stack is developed mainly by OP Labs and a few contributors such as Test In Prod. The limited number of contributors and experimental opportunities poses a risk for OP Stack to lag behind significant competitors, such as Arbitrum Orbit.

The grant process used previously is not well-suited for research and experimentation because if a project does not meet its goals, the OP tokens are taken back. To address this, we propose creating a safe space for researchers to work on OP Stack without worrying too much about feasibility. Researchers can document their failures and obstacles, providing valuable insights for future researchers to build upon and improve.

Encouraging external developers to contribute to the research and exploration of OP Stackā€™s possibilities is vital. It ensures that OP Stack stays in line with market demands. This approach allows OP Labsā€™ core developers to focus on essential features without having to chase market trends, which often diverge from core implementations.

The goal of this mission is both research and implementation. Therefore, the team must include developers who are capable of implementing these topics.

Example of research topics:

  • Research on enabling using ERC-20 token as a native gas token (Arbitrum Orbit has implemented it)
  • Research on redundant or decentralized sequencing (Credit)
  • Tooling to enable circumventing a faulty sequencer (Credit)
  • Research on batcher gas fee optimization (Example: Span Batch)

What is required to execute this Delegate Mission Request?:

  • The teams participating in this mission should have members skilled in implementing the research topics.
  • Developers need extensive experience in the relevant development field. Having a history of contributing to related open-source projects is a plus.
  • The mission aims not just at research but also at the practical application of the findings. This requires a combination of theoretical understanding and hands-on technical expertise.
  • Researchers are required to submit a comprehensive proposal, which should include:
    • A list of research topics.
    • Grant size justification for each topic.
    • The main researchers and developersā€™ relevant past experiences.
    • The potential uses and advantages of the proposed topics.
    • An initial plan for implementation, which may be modified during the project.
  • The implementation work should be carried out on a repository or forked repository that is open-sourced to the public.
  • Whether to submit a pull request to the core repository is optional.
  • By January 2025, researchers need to provide a report detailing their work. This report should cover the implementation process, results, use cases, and an account of any failures or challenges encountered.
  • Itā€™s preferable for one entity to submit a single proposal covering multiple topics, rather than multiple proposals unnecessarily.

How should the Token House measure progress towards this Mission?:

  • Monitor open source GitHub repository for progress.
  • Monitor adoption of the research and implementation.
  • Report document published after completion or failure by January 2025.

How should badgeholders measure impact upon completion of this Mission?:

  • Assess the extent to which the research and implementation are being utilized and adopted within the relevant community or by target users.
  • Monitor mentions and discussions about the tooling on various social media platforms and forums.
  • Analyze key metrics on GitHub such as Issues, Pull Requests, Stars, Watches, and Forks.
  • Incorporation into the official Optimism documentation (https://docs.optimism.io)
  • Integrated into the core repository or Optimism mainnet

Hello Diego and thank you for the tag. While I appreciate the general idea of what youā€™re trying to accomplish here, weā€™ve seen quite a bit of educational proposals that donā€™t have the impact I would like to see. This also requires quite a bit of work from the active Delegates, who are already pretty overloaded as is. Thatā€™s my personal take, there may be others that feel differently. That being said, I appreciate all of your effort and hard work you put into the Collective and Iā€™m very glad youā€™re here!

Apologies for including Chinese text in the previous response. Hereā€™s the English translation without any Chinese:

Whole Community Voting Governance Process:

  1. Proposal Period: A period before the official referendum where participants can understand the content and cast votes.

  2. Review Period: If the support and approval rates reach a certain threshold during this period, the proposal is on the verge of approval, entering the confirmation period. If not approved by the end, the proposal is rejected.

  3. Confirmation Period: When a proposal achieves a certain level of support and approval rates, it enters the confirmation period. Both rates must stay above the threshold. Falling below sends the decision back to the proposal stage.

  4. Execution Period: A cooling-off period before formal execution. The execution period can be specified when proposing, complying with the minimum execution period set for each track.

Architecture Design:

  • Voting Contract: A dedicated contract for on-chain governance, recording and managing the voting process. This contract defines voting rules, including start and end times, eligibility criteria, and voting weights.

  • Governance Module: Includes a dedicated governance module for proposal submission, voting, and decision-making. This module provides interfaces and methods for smooth governance processes.

  • Governance Parameters: On-chain governance involves setting parameters like approval ratios and minimum voting quantities. Adjustments can be made through governance proposals to meet diverse governance needs and community opinions.

All governance proposals, voting results, and decisions are recorded on the blockchain, ensuring transparency and traceability. This transparent governance mechanism establishes trust and credibility, providing a solid foundation for community participation and consensus-building.

Implement a prototype of an OP stack chain with mempool encryption.

Delegate Mission Request Template

Delegate Mission Request Summary: Implement a functional prototype of an OP stack chain with mempool encryption to draw insights regarding censorship resistance and front-running protection for OP stack networks.

S5 Intent 15: Intent 1. Progress Towards Technical Decentralization

Proposing Delegate: Looking for one

Proposal Tier 13: Fledging Tier

Baseline grant amount: 100 K OP (Up to 50 K OP per applicant)

Should this Foundation Mission be fulfilled by one or multiple applicants: Select from: Multiple.

Submit by: To be set by Grants Council

Selection by: To be set by Grants Council

Start date: If applicable

Completion date: 6 months

Specification

How will this Delegate Mission Request help accomplish the above Intent?

MEV front-running and censorship are vectors of centralization. R&D of solutions that can protect users from front-running and censorship are key to optimize for security, resilience and decentralization. Moreover, advancing towards providing optionality to deploy an encrypted Mempool chain with the OP stack is also aligned with growing the Superchain (Intent 2) and improving the consumer experience (Intent 3), nobody likes to be front-ran or in a sandwich attack.

Encryption is powerful in this regard, because the inability to observe transactional contents during validation (e.g. by the sequencer or other transaction supply chain intermediaries) precludes the possibility of discriminatory processing and thus makes it a lot harder (or even impossible) to front-run or censor.

What is required to execute this Delegate Mission Request?

  • Research and evaluate different mempool encryption technologies.
  • Assess how these technologies can integrate with the OP stack.
  • Define generalized mempool encryption interfaces.
  • Prototype and deploy one or more mempool encryption technologies.
  • Documentation of the implementation process and codebase.

How should the Token House measure progress towards this Mission?

  • Quality of mempool encryption research.
  • Assess functionality and effectiveness of the deployed prototype.
  • Assess quality of the documentation and codebase.

How should badgeholders measure impact upon completion of this Mission?

  • See total amount of transactions and contracts deployed in the prototype.
  • Measure amount of censored transactions using various methodology such as https://censorship.pics/ .
  • Total number of OPStack based chains implementing an encrypted mempool.

DAO ecosystem SuperDapp in Optimism.

Delegate Mission Request Template

Delegate Mission Request Summary: Reconciles the current DAO ecosystem fragmentation through a SuperDapp that forms the DAO space tissue in Optimism. The Superdapp could include but is not limited to: learning opportunities, job opportunities, marketplaces, dashboards & feeds.

The deliverable should be a Proof of Concept with a modular frontend that unifies DAO tooling in one Dapp and can be further scaled in the future to other tooling in the Superchain.

S5 Intent 15: Intent 2. Grow the Superchain.

Completion date: ASAP

Specification

How will this Delegate Mission Request help accomplish the above Intent?

We often talk about interoperability being one of the most fundamental value unlocks. Yet web3 is extremely fragmented. Silos not only create a terrible User Experience, many amazing projects fail to get enough traction since they donā€™t get enough exposure (fun fact: EAS was built in 2020 and after launch it was paused twice. Source: Green Pill Podcast - Ethereum Attestation Service).

Likewise, Optimism already has a lot of cool dApps deployed, but theyā€™re all fragmented across different front-ends, making the discovery & usage unnecessarily hard.

Having the first DAO tooling SuperDapp in Optimism would be a great win for the Superchain, DAO tooling projects and potentially bring many new users from the DAO ecosystem.

What is required to execute this Delegate Mission Request?

  • Research key DAO tools to be scoped for the POC.
  • Design a modular implementation.
  • Build integrations with the selected DAO tools.
  • Create a frontend optimized for user needs. (learning, job hunt, feed, etc.)

How should the Token House measure progress towards this Mission?

  • A report on the tools that can be added in the present and in the future.
  • Figma or similar design of the UI.
  • Functional UI optimized for user needs.

How should badgeholders measure impact upon completion of this Mission?

  • Users interacting with the frontend
  • Users interact with the DAO tooling UI as opposed to using the original UI
  • Specific metric generated by each DAO tool in the UI

Power Coalitions: a tool for governance quality and security in the Optimism Collective

Delegate Mission Request Summary:
The power dynamics of a group begins to surface when looking at each participant in isolation, but emerges fully only when taking into account who voters and delegates are participating with, namely the organizationā€™s internal power groups. This applies to all organizations, and is most significant for large groups of voters and delegates handling assets of substantial financial value.

Optimism DAO has over 140k voters, and thousands of delegates. The treasury they manage is worth around $8 billion, perhaps the largest amount in history managed together by such a large group of people. To fully reveal and understand the power dynamics within this group, a specialized tool is required. DeepDAOā€™s Coalitions is this tool.

For our purpose, a coalition is defined as a group of people who frequently vote together on the same proposals and in the same direction. This could be two people, three, ten, or more. DeepDAO already researched and experimented with finding voter coalitions, and voter personal networks. Two types of dashboards on our site serve as a POC for the value of such information.

The Coalitions tool will reveal deep connections and alignments between the Optimism Collective decision makers. It will identify their influential networks within the organization governance, as well as each participantā€™s personal voting context.

With our Coalitions tool, governance participants will discover who frequently votes in alignment with them, who votes in opposition, and the voter coalitions they belong to. Users will dive deeper to identify shared interests within the collective, and in other DAOs.

Track: Governance Accessibility
S5 Intent:
Proposing Delegate:
Grant requested: 45K OP
Should this Foundation Mission be fulfilled by one or multiple applicants: One
Submit by: To be set by Grants Council
Selection by: To be set by Grants Council
Start date: Q1 2024
Completion date: Q3 2024

Specification

How will this Delegate Mission Request help accomplish the above Intent?

  • Transparency and fairness: Power coalitions, sometimes referred to as an ā€œinvisible eliteā€, or ā€œinvisible structureā€ exist in any group. Understanding the power dynamics inside a DAO that manages significant assets is essential for decision making fairness, as it diminishes the information gap between actors, fosters better discussion, and contributes to mutual trust.

  • Security: A direct view into the power structure of the DAO provides context to its decision making process. This context is otherwise hidden, and without it the group governance is more opaque, and therefore vulnerable to potential collusions and governance attacks. Just one example: newly formed coalitions may indicate strengthening of one viewpoint or another, and serve as an early indication of an external intervention in governance.

  • Social connections: DeepDAOā€™s Coalitions tool enables people to find others who are already aligned with them, as well as people who may not be. People who joined their circle lately, and others who havenā€™t been active in a while.

  • The Coalitions tool points to groups that should be proactively included in discussions, and DAO communications, in order to consider all perspectives. Being proactive here also means recognition, which works both for group prestige, and for the DAO as the ā€œGrand Recognizerā€ of its contributors.

  • Decision making quality: the coalitions tool distinguishes sub-groups which most frequently support, or oppose the outcomes of binary DAO proposals, and groups that are antagonistic to each other. This is specifically noticeable in contested DAO proposals.

  • From a group management perspective, knowing you have an updated data tool to identify potential clashes as they form, serves as an assurance that the various points of view within the governing body are taken into account.

  • For delegators: It is often difficult to decide who to delegate your voting power to. The Coalitions tool will suggest people to delegate to, based on finding the best-aligned coalition, and the most prominent users in the coalition.

  • For delegates: Find like minded people, who already frequently vote with you, to collaborate with and create new value with.

  • BD & Marketing: Understanding governance coalitions, and looking at their connections outside of the DAO, will enable Optimism to find hidden potential for partnerships, and new business opportunities.

What is required to execute this Delegate Mission Request?

  1. Full data on Optimismā€™s voters and delegates.
  2. Efficient algorithms for finding addressesā€™ personal networks (addresses who vote with them, and against them), and for finding voter coalitions. The calculation for finding these coalitions is compute intensive and requires a strong database and strong servers.
  3. Building the UI.
  4. Perhaps most important is an understanding of the power structure of a large group, the value, complexity, and intensity of governance. As an example, given the computation challenge and the required server resources, there is a need to make smart decisions on the sub-groups of voters and delegates to concentrate on, and reveal coalitions in. The top 100 delegates may be an obvious choice, but it cannot be the only one. Additional groups may include lower ranking delegates, recent delegates or single voters, as well as others.

How should the Token House measure progress towards this Mission?

Progress should be tracked by the following milestones:

  1. UI/UX design of the Coalitions tool screens: 6 weeks from proposal acceptance.
  2. Beta version deployed on DeepDAOā€™s staging environment: 3 months from ending of milestone 1.
  3. QA: 6 weeks.
  4. Deployment open to the public: one month from ending of milestone 2.

Total time for development: 6 months.

How should badgeholders measure impact upon completion of this Mission?

  1. By the number of voters and delegates visiting the site.
  2. By the number of voters and delegates connecting their wallet to view their personal network and coalitions.
  3. By the intensity and quality of discussion that the Coalitions tool will generate in all forums and social networks.

Background

What makes you best-suited to execute this Mission? Please consider any experience relevant to the above requirements:

Mission requests for sponsorship should not be focused on an implementing team, but it seems like this question does focus on team specific competence. So I will answer it for DeepDAO, and it should be ignored if irrelevant here.

DeepDAO has been tracking governance and DAOs since the DAO movement started growing in early 2020. We have been the largest aggregator, and the #1 go-to source of truth for DAOs, serving the DAO ecosystem, researchers, crypto and mainstream media (hundreds, if not thousands of mentions), as well as academic research (quoted in over 100 published academic papers).

The base dataset required for the Coalitions tool is already tracked by DeepDAO. We track the Collectiveā€™s proposals, votes, voters and delegates with full details of their involvement, voting power, delegators, and actual execution of voting power. DeepDAO tracks this type of comprehensive data for hundreds of manually researched, categorized and enriched DAOs, which provides context for each individual DAO activity.

DeepDAO already computes voting Coalitions for hundreds of DAO governance systems. Our site features 2 address coalitions, and our database has larger, up to 10 address coalitions. We are familiar both with the difficulties in computing such data, and the benefits of observing it when it is there.

For DeepDAO, the Coalitions tool, and governance structure is a passion and a core business. In addition to offering it to Optimism, we are also in the process of working with academic researchers to further explore the subject. Grant submissions for EU funds are considered as well.

How can this benefit the ecosystem and projects?
The proposed Coalitions tool is on the cutting edge of governance participation, and understanding. It will provide several benefits, as outlined above in the ā€œSpecificationā€ section.

Alignment with the relevant Intent
Tools such as Coalitions are the evolution of DAO data analytics ā€“ DAO analytics 2.0 ā€“ and we believe it is at the core of a fully functioning governance for large decentralized organizations. As such it is clearly a significant tool for governance accessibility.

Optimism TV: 24/7 non-stop streaming about the Optimism ecosystem

Delegate Mission Request Template

Delegate Mission Request Summary: Create a curated, uninterrupted stream of valuable video content focused on Optimism, its governance and the Superchain.

S5 Intent: #4 - Governance Accessibility

Proposing Delegate: -

Proposal Tier: Ember

Baseline grant amount: 7.000 OP

Should this Foundation Mission be fulfilled by one or multiple applicants: 1

Submit by: To be set by Grants Council

Selection by: To be set by Grants Council

Start date: -

Completion date: 31/12/24

Specification

How will this Delegate Mission Request help accomplish the above Intent?

There is a lot of high-quality video content created about Optimism, its governance, and the Superchain.

By bringing all that content together in one place, we would make the information much more accessible to anyone interested in learning more about these topics.

Focus on governance: Governance is a complex topic that requires constant updating and involves a lot of reading time to understand the mechanics, councils, and structure. Video content makes this onboarding much more enjoyable and could lower the barrier to entry to increase the number of governance participants.

What is required to execute this Delegate Mission Request?

  • Create a specific channel where the content can be streamed: platforms such as YouTube or Twitch would seem ideal, but if there were a decentralized solution it would be an important addition.
  • Content curation: just because there is a lot of content does not mean that all of it is valuable. An exhaustive filter must be carried out to find the best resources that provide real value to viewers. Some examples of valuable content to be considered may be: Optimism Governance & Grants Overview: Season 5 by Michael.
  • Accessibility of the transmission and content: the idea of this mission is that the content is accessible at all times. It should be a constant streaming but at the same time have a repertoire with links of on-demand content so that the interested party can see exactly what is looking for.

How should the Token House measure progress towards this Mission?

  1. Establish the channel where the transmission will take place, with all the necessary information so that the viewer understands how to use it properly.

  2. Report of visualizations: Metrics are used to see the reach of the stream, as well as to verify that the transmission is working correctly.

  3. Content update: as the months go by and the development of both the Optimism Governance and the Superchain progresses, new content should be added to reflect these changes.

Specification

How will this Delegate Mission Request help accomplish the above Intent?

In response to the RFP for OP Stack Zero Knowledge Proof, there are ongoing developments in two instruction setsā€”RISC-V by RiscZero and MIPS by O(1) Labsā€”to provide ZK proof of the fault-proof program of Optimism. Besides RISC-V and MIPS, WASM is a widely adopted instruction set architecture (ISA) fully supported by popular compilers, such as Go. Supporting Wasm in ZK fault proof enhances the prover diversity and thus introduces an additional security layer to the OP fault-proof system.

What is required to execute this Delegate Mission Request?

Fulfilling this mission entails developing a zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) system capable of verifying the fault-proof program of Optimism compiled in Wasm code using the Go compiler. To prove op-program-client in Wasm, we may require minor modifications to the Go compiler and op-program-client with maximum OP stack compatibility. Practical implementation involves demonstrating the proof systemā€™s functionality by proving the state transition between two blocks in a standard configuration OP Stack chain.

The Wasm fault-proof virtual machine should support the preimage oracle syscall, enabling the loading of preimage for a specified hash into memory for program utilization. It must also verify that the hash of the preimage matches the specified hash.

Overcoming the challenge of deriving a single block using the op-program client, with potential billions of Wasm instructions, requires aggressive optimizations to reduce proving time significantly.

How should the Token House measure progress towards this Mission?

The evaluation of progress can be structured around the completion of key milestones:

  1. Specification: Develop a comprehensive specification for the ZKP design, outlining the criteria that the implementation aims to fulfill.

  2. PoC Check-in:

  3. Demonstration of the ZK Wasm Virtual Machine (VM) executing the OP Stack state transition using wasm compiled with the op-program-client.

  4. Presentation of a ZK Wasm VM demo proving the OP Stack state transition on a smoke test case (one-step derivation) of the op-program-client.

  5. Executable Demo Proving OP Stack State Transition:

  6. Implement the ZKP, ensuring it functions end-to-end and is seamlessly integrated with a live OP Stack chain.

  7. Provide clear instructions enabling anyone to independently test the proving system and validate the OP Stack state transition between two blocks.

By achieving these milestones, Token House can effectively gauge the advancement and success of the mission.

How should badgeholders measure impact upon completion of this Mission?

  • Total number of token bridges using this proof system
  • Open-source ZKP research shared with the broader community making it easier for future ZKP builders
  • Fees collected by provers for their proving services

Have you engaged a Grant-as-a-service provider for this Mission Request?
