Season 8: Collective Reward Framework

While we wait on Permissions Updates for posting in the Policies and Templates, we will include the Budget Board’s updated framework for Seasons 8 and 9 in the text below.

Seasons 8 and 9 Framework

The Collective Reward Framework exists as non-binding guidelines that attempt to standardize rewards across various types of contributions and to help establish expectations for contributors. They are currently used as a reference for Councils, Boards, and Commissions proposing budgets and for retroactive governance participation rewards.

Various contributions are categorized into Impact Levels, ranging from 1-8. Each level includes a brief description of the type of contribution that corresponds with each level and non-comprehensive examples are provided.

An amount of OP rewards is suggested for each level. This “conversion rate” should be updated at the start of each Season to account for changing conditions.

The Framework was created by the Foundation and introduced in Season 6. The guidelines are now updated by the Budget Board.

Additional details and context can be found in the complete forum post.

Perspectives on Tiers and Updates:

As the framework is non-binding, the Budget Board believes the community should have the flexibility to gauge the suitability of the tiers to specific impacts; however, we believe that departures from the framework should require justification.

For the lower impact tiers 1-3, we have suggested a modest per Season increase (~20%), as we believe small rewards can have an outsized impact for the community. This can only be the case if the community is judicious in validating claimed impact and we would advocate for setting a moderately high bar for claims of impact. Good actors may be given the benefit of the doubt, but gamesmanship should be discouraged.

For the middle impact tiers 5-7, we have taken a “wait and see” approach. If the Collective believes that the impact tiers fail to reflect the impact of the categorized contributions, that feedback can be used to revisit the impact tiers in the future.

For the higher impact tiers (8-9), we would defer to prospective Council leads to articulate a budget that is tailored to accomplish the highest level of impact relative to the cumulative contributions of the council’s members within a season. A well-reasoned explanation for a departure from the impact tier should be met with reasonable deference.

Over time, the Budget Board aspires to quantify and study the impact tiers to determine whether the concept of tiers accomplishes the purposes of sustainability and impact. We encourage the community to review the tiers in the same vein, as some forms of impact are either immeasurable or difficult to measure without visibility.
