Quadratic Funding + Retro: Token Engineering the Superchain!

Help test a new type of Gitcoin round that boosts the votes of Superchain stakeholders!

Token Engineering the Superchain is attracting token engineering practitioners and projects to the Superchain – and it’s now live on Gitcoin! Your participation will have a substantial impact in deciding which projects receive the round’s $60K matching pool.

With just a few minutes of your time right now, you can also help test this new approach to seed funding impact on the Superchain. The Token Engineering Commons (TEC) is using a new approach called “Tunable Quadratic Funding” (TQF) to ‘boost’ the Quadratic Funding impact of Gitcoin contributions based on two factors:

Amplifying the Voice of Superchain Governance:

  • This Gitcoin round is designed to drive token engineering impact into the Superchain – and who better to shape that impact than the Superchain community itself? That’s why the TEC is using TQF to boost the voting power of OP badgeholders, delegates, and token holders.

Expertise-Boosted Quadratic Funding:

  • The TEC also uses TQF to boost votes for Gitcoin round participants with demonstrated token engineering expertise. It’s our way of combining the participatory power of Quadratic Funding with Subject Matter Expertise in our capital allocation programs. It’s a complementary approach to Optimism’s experiments in incorporating “guest voters with expertise.”

Proactive Seeds, Retroactive Rewards

Your participation in this Gitcoin round also helps test another innovation in capital allocation: integrating Quadratic Funding and Retro Funding! The Quadratic Funding round serves as up-front seed funding that projects use to generate Superchain impact. Later this year, the TEC will run a follow-on retro round with Gitcoin’s EasyRetro to retroactively reward these projects based on their actual impact, tracked in Karma GAP.

“Niche Retro”

This innovative approach to combining quadratic and retro funding enables the TEC to micro-target capital allocations to a specific domain of expertise. It’s what we call “Niche Retro” funding, and while our focus is on generating token engineering impact in the Superchain, we see this approach being replicated in other domains as well, such as gaming, defi, security audits, and much more.

Data-Driven Learning & Iteration

The TEC migrated to OP Mainnet in 2023. It is our home and we are committed to helping the Superchain on its path to open metagovernance. To this end, we will be publicly sharing our findings from this experiment in the OP Forum as we iterate together in making the Superchain the most trustworthy of all blockchain ecosystems.

It’s Easy

Your participation in this experiment couldn’t be easier. With just a few minutes of your time and some donations of as little as 1 $OP, you can have a big influence on which projects get the biggest share of the $60K matching pool contributed by Gitcoin and the TEC. These projects will then be eligible for the follow-on retro funding round later this year!

Just pop over to our Gitcoin round right now, find a few projects you think will have a good impact on the Superchain, and cast your votes right now!

One last thing! If you’re interested in getting involved in this experiment or the TEC more generally, please just drop us a note in the comments below. We’d love your help!

@jade thanks for kicking off this thread  Our project, Change Code, is participating in our second Token Engineering Gitcoin round and we’re really excited to be most of the way through our migration to the Superchain!

Change Code has developed a token protocol for impact tokenization and monetization called Change Credits. Change Credits are a new ReFi/DeFi primitive (already in production as web3 native carbon credits) that utilize hypercerts and the Ethereum Attestation Service (EAS) to maximize interoperability with the broader ecosystem.

As a primitive, Change Credits are highly adaptable to many funding and impact verification flows, ranging from retroactive funding and community donations to impact bonds and structured financing for social enterprises.

You can learn more about our architecture at our docs here.

In addition to bringing key funding and tokenization infrastructure to the OP Stack and attracting ReFi and social good projects to the Superchain, it is our intention to make the our protocol another tool available for the Optimism ecosystem to carry out its own extensive public goods funding initiatives. While resources to fund public goods may seem vast, they are not endless.

Change Code’s protocol has the ability to drive funds to the most effective implementors by enabling funds to be committed to public goods in advance and then for investors to competitively determine which projects they believe are most likely to succeed. Our design balances the community’s interest in keeping opportunities open to all while channeling treasury or other forms of public funding exclusively toward proven results.

You can learn more about (and support if you’re so inclined) our Gitcoin project here. Or if you want to see some of what we’ve already built, you can check out our web3 native carbon registry at bcarbon.changecode.io, which as @MontyMerlin knows is undergoing a migration to Celo as it becomes part of the Superchain itself!

Thanks and excited to be here :rocket:

Thanks for this thread @jade, we are excited to introduce EVMcrispr to the community!

Project Overview:
EVMcrispr is a powerful tool designed to simplify interactions with smart contracts on EVM-compatible chains through intuitive, UNIX-like commands. Our goal is to make complex blockchain operations, such as creating DAO votes, managing DAO configurations, and executing DeFi strategies, accessible to users of all technical levels.

Impact on Optimism:
We plan to significantly lower the technical barriers for users in the Optimism ecosystem by enabling more efficient and effective interaction with smart contracts. This will drive greater participation in DeFi, DAOs, and other decentralized activities, ultimately contributing to the growth and sustainability of the ecosystem, as we already support 17 OP Stack chains). We’re also collaborating with the Superfluid team to streamline the distribution of future Optimism RetroPGF funds, making this process more efficient and secure.

Support Our Project:
If you’re interested in supporting our efforts, you can donate to EVMcrispr through the following links:

Tunable QF boosting OP governance stakeholders while factoring in TE expertise is a smart move. Combining upfront funding with follow-on retro rewards should effectively drive focused impact.

The matching pool is live now, offering a significant opportunity to shape TE efforts on the Superchain. Even small contributions can have outsized effects thanks to the quadratic matching. This “Niche Retro” model could be a game-changer for targeted funding in specific domains.

Looking forward to seeing the data and iterations from this experiment. It’s exciting to watch the Superchain’s token engineering capabilities grow through these community-driven initiatives.

Thank you @jade for giving us this platform!

I wanted to introduce Eisodos Multimodal, a media company working on and within pop-up cities. Gitcoin Link: Gitcoin | Explorer

The Eisodos team will attend a number of Pop-up Cities in the broader Zuzalu ecosystem in the coming month, interacting with a number of cryptonatives and builders within Web3. These Pop-up Cities provide an ample ground to produce content on Superchain and Optimism’s ecosystem, and direct these in-person presentations to a precise target audience that can pivot and build upon the Superchain.

This proposal aims to create educational content that will cover TE Academy basics, review TE tools like cadCAD, Cenit Finance and Inverter, and provide tokenomic analyses of projects built on the Superchain, such as Uniswap, Curve, AAVE, and Synthetix.

The content produced shall emphasize on how the Superchain enhances these protocols through deep liquidity and scalability across Layer 2 networks. Throughout these presentations, we also aim to feature guest speakers and live tool demos.

I hope you consider supporting us in this round, and follow Eisodos to stay up to date with our content!

Hey Optimists!

Flow State is excited to be part of this Gitcoin round and to bring Streaming Quadratic Funding to the Superchain!

We launched the first SQF round on Optimism this spring. It struck a chord with long-time QF participants. Public good builders know the challenges of surviving off grants–unpredictable funding timing and amounts, competition for donor/voter eyeballs in short sprints, and the challenge of building lasting relationships with a quarterly+ grant cadence. SQF changes all of that. It’s like a web3 Patreon supercharged by the free-rider-busting quadratic matching formula. We think it can usher in a new era of sustainable “commons-based employment.”

Since the pilot, we’ve developed a suite of Grants Stack-like tools for communities to launch and manage their own SQF rounds with no code. We’re collecting interest for a September training cohort program for Superchain builders and communities. We’d love to have you join us!

And if you’d like to support our work, we’re participating in the three Gitcoin Community Grant Rounds below!

That’s so cool, @jade! At Pairwise, we’ve been experimenting with Retro Funding Round 4, making it easy and fun to signal preferences on Retro Funding while promoting project discovery. It’s all about helping these projects get known and receive community signaling. You can find more details comparing Pairwise data with the official metrics here.

I love the idea of involving stakeholders in this funding allocation decision. Let’s call on all stakeholders who support what we’re doing at Pairwise to back us during these last 2 days!

Thanks @jade for this thread! The Regen Atlas is excited to be part of the community.

The Regen Atlas is a location-based green crypto-asset marketplace designed to address market inefficiencies by displaying all existing green crypto assets and aggregating their entire value chain (i.e. issuers, tokenizers, certifiers, raters, regulators, buyers). Specifically, the platform aims to offer:

  1. Support for Diverse Green Assets: The number of green crypto-assets has been constantly growing over the last years. On the Regen Atlas, users have access to a broad spectrum of green crypto-assets (and soon corresponding stakeholders) that go beyond just carbon assets, including but not limited to biodiversity, agriculture, green and blue bonds, and forwards contracts.
  2. Aggregated Certifications: The platform will compile and display ratings from specialized certifiers, offering users a centralized resource for assessing the quality and potential impact of various environmental projects. Aggregation will empower users with the information necessary to make informed decisions around green assets.
  3. Top-down Territorial Incentives: As a geo-interface, the Regen Atlas plans to allow users to create and publish incentives tied to specific geographic locations, developing natural capital in the most impactful areas
  4. Support for Existing Green Assets: In the future, the platform will enable the tokenization of existing green assets on the blockchain, making them more accessible and tradable.

The Regen Atlas will impact the Optimism ecosystem by:

  • Evolving Standards for the Production of Green Tokens: The Regen Atlas aims to broaden the scope of tokenized green assets available for exploration, trading, and funding. Our platform will support a diverse range of environmental assets beyond carbon, addressing a gap in the current market and providing a more comprehensive suite of options for users interested in environmental sustainability. Additionally, we aim to close the quality gap by aggregating certifiers of material claims for green tokens, building a competitive marketplace for certification where any service provider can provide verifiable claims.
  • Enhancing its Real-world and Climate Awareness: The Regen Atlas distinguishes itself as a geographic aggregator for location-based crypto-assets produced by real-world communities. This specificity allows non-virtual communities to engage with the Superchain in a place-based manner that has thus far been underexplored by Web3.

We are live on the TEC Gitcoin round, and welcoming your support and input!

Thanks Jade! Breadchain Cooperative is also part of this round for funding to continue developing the solidarity primitives we’ve already built as well as new ones for Optimism as we’ve shared in our Optimism Builders Grant.

At the Breadchain Cooperative, we want to prove that the economic design space enabled by crypto allows for the development of innovative, sustainable methods of funding and co-governing resources that were not possible before. We build what we call "solidarity primitives’’ - the first of which is our Crowdstaking Application. Functioning as an engine for fundraising, the Crowdstaking Application allows users to help in funding various cooperative projects while also being able to withdraw their initial stake in full at any time. The development of tools such as the Crowdstaking Application is crucial for attracting users who are drawn to non-financialized forms of coordination enabled by blockchains.

Hope you all will consider giving to us for this round on our page here.

Superchain Research Initiative

Together with PrimeDAO, we are organizing a Superchain Research Initiative. Our teams are collaborating to create research pieces six priority areas for further exploration. We’re inviting all OP governance and tokenomics researchers to participate in the Superchain Research Competition on BountyCaster, which will help advance Governance and Tokenomics in the Superchain and earn rewards.

Support the TEC Gitcoin grant: Gitcoin | Explorer

Superchain Token Swaps

In addition to the Research initiative, we are working closely with PrimeDAO to further research token swaps as an alignment within the Superchain. The emergence of L2 ecosystems and the resurgence of OG DeFi are re-igniting interest in Token Swaps and comparable mechanisms to align incentives. Token Swaps between OP Chains and projects can foster stronger collaboration and shared goals across the network.

Hey, happy to join as well!

We’re building GovGraph – an innovative approach to visualizing and understanding the relationships within governance ecosystems. Unlike traditional scoring systems, GovGraph focuses on the connections and interactions between power users, such as Delegates, Developers, and Citizens. It should help improving the capture resistance and resource allocation of governance systems.

By mapping these relationships through a dynamic and interactive graph, users can identify alliances, conflicts of interest, and clusters of influence. The system allows for detailed filtering and searching, providing insights into social graphs, voting patterns, and potential sybil attacks. This project aims to enhance the transparency and efficiency of the governance and funding processes. We’ll focus on the OP Citizen House first and then explore other governance systems.

Here’s a screenshot from the current build, most of the connections are based on Farcaster connections, but we plan to have a number of various datapoints
