Mission Request Summary
S6 Intent: 3A
Mission: Grow application developers on the Superchain by organizing and supporting hackathons to encourage innovation and development of decentralized applications (dApps) within the Optimism ecosystem.
Proposer: PR0
Total Grant Amount: 300k OP
Grants per hackathon: Up to 100k OP for multiple events.
Background:
Hackathons are proven platforms for fostering innovation, collaboration, and rapid prototyping within developer communities. By organizing hackathons, the Optimism ecosystem can attract new developers, stimulate the creation of novel dApps, and further expand its developer base. Hackathons encourage hands-on development and provide participants with the opportunity to engage deeply with Optimismās Superchain technology. These events help spark creativity, foster community engagement, and provide developers with the tools and resources they need to build and launch impactful applications.
Mission Summary:
This mission seeks to grow the developer community and encourage the development of dApps on the Optimism Superchain by supporting hackathons. These events will provide developers with the opportunity to build, collaborate, and showcase innovative solutions using the Optimism Superchain. The initiative will also help participants learn about the technical advantages of Optimism, connect with like-minded developers, and contribute to the long-term success of the ecosystem.
Goal:
To increase the number of developers building on Optimism by organizing and funding hackathons. These events will help create new dApps, encourage innovation, and introduce developers to the technical possibilities of the Optimism Superchain.
Should this Mission be fulfilled by one or multiple applicants?

How will this Mission Request help accomplish the above Intent?
Hackathons provide a structured environment where developers can rapidly prototype and launch dApps. By funding these events, Optimism can attract new developers to its ecosystem, foster collaboration, and inspire the creation of new applications. This mission will directly support Intent 3 by encouraging hands-on development and allowing developers to explore the Superchainās features in a collaborative, competitive environment.
Why Hackathons Matter for Developer Growth:
- Attract New Talent: Hackathons draw in developers from diverse backgrounds, providing an entry point for new contributors to engage with the Optimism ecosystem.
- Foster Collaboration: These events encourage teamwork and knowledge sharing, building stronger developer communities around Optimism.
- Create New dApps: Hackathons are ideal for quickly developing innovative applications, often leading to the creation of projects that can be further refined and launched post-event.
- Showcase Potential: Hackathons give developers the chance to demonstrate whatās possible on Optimism, leading to increased adoption and network growth.
What is required to execute this Mission Request?
- Hackathon Planning and Organization: Event organizers or partners will need to handle logistics, marketing, and participant management to ensure successful hackathons.
- Prizes and Incentives: Financial support for hackathon prizes (up to 100k OP per event) will incentivize participation and reward the most innovative projects.
- Technical Support and Mentorship: Experts from the Optimism community will be required to mentor participants and provide guidance on building dApps on the Superchain.
- Community Engagement: Hackathons should be promoted widely across the community to attract a diverse range of developers and ensure high participation rates.
Budget Allocation:
- Up to 100k OP per hackathon to cover:
- Prizes for winning teams.
- Event management and marketing. Up to 20%
- Technical mentorship and developer resources.
- Follow-up support for hackathon projects with strong potential.
Requirements for participating:
- Open to Developers of All Levels: Hackathons should be accessible to both experienced developers and newcomers to the Optimism ecosystem.
- Focus on Innovation: Projects developed during hackathons should aim to solve real-world problems and showcase the potential of the Optimism Superchain.
- Post-Hackathon Support: Winning teams should be encouraged to further develop their projects and receive ongoing support from the community to bring their dApps to full deployment.
How should governance participants measure impact upon completion of this Mission?
- Number of Hackathons Held: Track the number of hackathons successfully organized under this initiative.
- Number of Developers Participating: Measure the total number of developers involved in these events, especially new participants in the Optimism ecosystem.
- Number of New dApps Developed: Monitor the number of projects created during hackathons that go on to be developed and deployed within the Optimism ecosystem.
- Community Engagement: Evaluate the level of community participation and feedback from the hackathons to gauge overall impact.
Milestones:
Q1: Creating partnerships with event coordinators and mentors.
Q2: First set of hackathons held, with participants developing dApps and prototypes on Optimism.
Q3: Continued hackathons with expanded outreach to attract more developers; support provided to winning teams for further project development.
Q4: Full deployment of hackathon projects within the Optimism ecosystem and evaluation of the long-term impact on developer growth.
