Season 7 Incentives Eligibility

In November, the Foundation shared the following Collective Intent - a singular goal for the entire ecosystem to work towards -for Season 7:

All contributions in the Collective should be working towards this Intent, which is focused on bringing interoperability to the Superchain: a core pillar of the product vision.

To support OP Chains, developers, builders, and the community in their efforts to progress towards this goal, all incentive programs and the chain delegation program for Season 7 will be available to chains on a fully-standard, governance-approved release of the OP Stack and have opted into the Security Council (or are on track to). Adhering to the Standard Rollup Charter is a technical prerequisite to becoming a Stage 1 chain and to be a part of the interoperability set we’re working towards building.

The reward mechanisms are designed to naturally allocate incentives toward chains driving impact towards making Superchain interoperability a reality. Incentive programs include: Retro Funding, airdrops, Grants Council grants, growth campaigns, and more.

To provide an accessible resource to see which chains are eligible, the Superchain Ecosystem team has developed the Superchain Index, built and maintained by the Superchain Ecosystem team. The Superchain Index pulls data from the Superchain Registry, which serves as the source of truth to identify the OP Chains that are in the Superchain Ecosystem and what modifications they’ve made. To be featured in the Superchain Index and eligible for Season 7 incentives, chains must be added to the Superchain Registry.

  • Green Chain is a standard-configured chain that adheres to the Standard Rollup Charter, thus is on a governance-approved version of OP Stack (specifically, the version listed in the TOML files referenced in the SRC) and has migrated bridge upgradability to the Optimism Security Council.
  • Yellow Chain is a standard-configured chain, but is in the process of either updating to the latest version of the OP Stack and/or migrating bridge upgradability to the Optimism Security Council.
  • Gray Chain is an OP Stack chain that is on an older version, or has deviated from standard configuration but remains values aligned and contributes revenue to the Optimism Collective as part of the Superchain ecosystem.

Green and yellow chains comprise the Superchain, a network of OP-governed chains built on a common standard of the OP Stack that share security, governance, and values. The shared standards that green and yellow chains are built on will enable these chains to eventually be interoperable with one another in the Superchain. To showcase the network effects of the Superchain and to signify a chain is built on the ecosystem’s standard, all chains within the Superchain will indicate they are “built on the Superchain.” Gray chains are a part of the broader Superchain ecosystem, built on the OP Stack and share the values and vision of scaling Ethereum together.

Season 7 eligibility aims to incentivize and reward chains that are committed to reaching Stage 1 and progressing towards an interoperable future together. Chains that are committed to standard configuration and migrating bridge upgradability to the Optimism Security Council, via both public and legal commitments, are eligible. This means both green and yellow chains qualify this season. Gray chains remain an important part of the Superchain ecosystem and these chains are a part of the standard shared revenue model that all OP Chains in the Superchain ecosystem commit to. We’re excited to work with gray chains that aspire to be green by working towards a path to become chains with a standard configuration.

Looking ahead to Season 8 and beyond, there may be additional considerations for eligibility, including meeting economic thresholds, launching with OP Deployer, and migrating bridge upgradability to the Optimism Security Council. This approach aligns with the Collective’s goal of ensuring all Superchain participants are both OP-governed and impactful.

We’re excited about the progress we’re making as a Collective - working towards a shared goal, and clearly aligning incentives with desired outcomes.
