Is/will this project be open sourced?: In the Future

Optimism native?: No

Date of deployment/expected deployment on Optimism: 8/5/2022

What is the problem statement this proposal hopes to solve for the Optimism ecosystem?: Onboarding users to options markets face a number of challenges when users are first learning about options financial products. Firstly, there is the difficulty of understanding the terminology used in options trading. This can be a barrier to understanding due to the complex and often technical language used to describe options. New users may also struggle to understand the intricacies of options pricing, as well as the nuances of different strategies. Furthermore, new participants need to understand the risk associated with options trading, and how to manage that risk. Finally, new users may lack the resources and experience to properly analyze and evaluate options trading strategies, which can make it difficult to make informed & responsible decisions. Our analysis shows that traditional layer 2 users are sophisticated market participants, however to utilize options markets, they may need additional tailored educational material to the specific domain uses delivered to them in digestible pieces of content to overcome the hurdles outlined herein.

How does your proposal offer a value proposition solving the above problem?: Premia has been working the last few months on academy content to ease both defi native users who don’t use hedging strategies, and traditional finance users who do not use defi instruments to lower the barrier to entry and simplify the decentralized options onboarding experience. We plan to use learn to earn, and learn by doing constructs to make the experience friendly, engaging, and valuable (both monetary and figuratively). Premia would implement courses specific to Optimism and target users that we think would have high conversion rates. By targeting users of similar complexity instruments (perps, advanced LPs, etc) we believe they would enjoy the experience of getting paid a small monetary reward to complete a light weight course. A portion of the grant would be used to directly incentivize users to test out the products on Optimism, and a portion would be used to increase the depth of the OP options pool to allow for more favorable pricing for new and old users alike.

Why will this solution be a source of growth for the Optimism ecosystem?: The solution would target users that we believe would have high conversion rates. Also we welcome the Grant Council to approve our list before it is submitted as a merkle tree, to ensure no malicious intent. We would use in house research, intelligence vendor platforms (like nansen), etc to target user groups that utilize similar products or have similar complexity that predominantly only transact on mainnet or other L2s. By showing these users the ease of use and demystifying option product types we hope they will become regular optimism participants, whether on our platform or our competitors. Our intent and ultimate goal is to level up financial literacy in a responsible way, whether they find a new home with Premia or otherwise for their option needs. As we believe this will drive activity on our platform, the portion utilized for increased liquidity on Premia, ideally will generate returns paid in OP tokens. We would then utilize this revenue stream to directly inject into expanding the wallet addresses allowed to participate in the learn to earn program.

Has your project previously applied for an OP grant?: No

Number of OP tokens requested: 235,000

Did the project apply for or receive OP tokens through the Foundation Partner Fund?: No

If OP tokens were requested from the Foundation Partner Fund, what was the amount?: NA

How much will your project match in co-incentives? (not required but recommended, when applicable): 450,000 Premia Tokens for 2023 (Liquidity Mining Emissions)

How will the OP tokens be distributed? (please include % allocated to different initiatives such as user rewards/marketing/liquidity mining. Please also include a justification as to why each of these initiatives align with the problem statement this proposal is solving.): 75,000 Learn to Earn (36%), 160,000 OP Call Liquidity (64%)
75,000 OP Learn to Earn: Our initial target will be to onboard 5,000 new users through our targeted academy campaign (15 OP per user). We will do this on a technical level with a vetted merkle tree of wallets with the highest likelihood of conversion. After 1 month of the campaign being live, the remaining tokens will then be made available to the next tier of wallets, through an upgraded merkle tree, and the program will be on a first come first served basis, after 1 additional month, we can then open the platform up to a wider list if any tokens remain. As the first tier of these users would be predominantly participants of mainnet and other L2’s we hope they will become regular optimism users.
160,000 OP Call Pool Liquidity: This will be deposited into the OP Call Pool (Premia Blue) to generate returns to sustain the program long term, as well as allow for better OP pricing and depth of markets for users.

Over what period of time will the tokens be distributed for each initiative? Shorter timelines are preferable to longer timelines. Shorter timelines (on the order of weeks) allow teams to quickly demonstrate achievement of milestones, better facilitating additional grants via subsequent proposals: We acknowledge that 40% will be given up front and 60% after a midway milestone.
Thus we will begin with the below:
Go-Live of Academy (March 2023)
Deposit of Liquidity 63,000 OP (Upon Initial Distribution)
Target onboarding of 2,000 Users - 30,000 OP (End of April 2023 - Milestone One)
Request Additional Grant Payout
Deposit of Liquidity 97,000 OP (Upon Receipt)
Target onboarding of 3,000 Users - 45,000 OP (End of May - Completion Milestone)

Please clearly define the milestones you expect to achieve in order to receive milestone based installments. Please consider how each milestone relates to incentivizing sustainable usage and liquidity on Optimism. Progress towards each milestone must be trackable:

Milestone Option 1:
Preferred payout method 40%-60%
Go-Live of Academy (March 2023)
Deposit of Liquidity 63,000 OP (Upon Initial Distribution)
Target onboarding of 2,000 Users - 30,000 OP (End of April 2023 - Milestone One)
Request Additional Grant Payout
Deposit of Liquidity 97,000 OP (Upon Receipt)
Target onboarding of 3,000 Users - 45,000 OP (End of May - Completion Milestone)

Milestone Option 2:
In the case a 20%-20%-60% is more appetizing for the Grants Council we propose.
Go-Live of Academy (March 2023)
Deposit of Liquidity 31,500 OP (Upon Initial Distribution)
Target onboarding of 1,000 Users - 15,000 OP (End of April 2023 - Milestone One)
Request Additional Grant Payout - 20%
Deposit of Liquidity 31,500 OP (Upon Second Payout Distribution)
Target onboarding of 1,000 Users - 15,000 OP (End of May 2023 - Milestone Two)
Request Additional Grant Payout - 60%
Deposit of Liquidity 97,000 OP (Upon Receipt)
Target onboarding of 3,000 Users - 45,000 OP (End of June - Completion Milestone)

Milestone tracking will be conducted by on chain credentials (NFT Certificates) for the completion of the academy course. In the case Milestone Option 2 is decided, then Premia will conduct the first 20% as a proof of concept so that both parties will be more comfortable with the ability to scale the initiative, review the user base participating, course correct if needed, etc. before any additional payouts are completed.

Update: Milestone recommendations have been provided given the Benchmark/Critical guidelines and can be found here.

Why will incentivized users and liquidity on Optimism remain after incentives dry up?: As our pools historically have generated capital returns for liquidity depositing users (knock on wood), we propose to reinvest OP returns back into the program on a quarterly basis to keep the growth ongoing. If we reach the completion milestone and continuous reinvestment into the OP Option academy program in a sustainable way, we hope you will allow us the opportunity to apply for a grant again in the future to continue to scale this initiative!

Hey Premia folks! I’d highly recommend that this portion of the proposal is further fleshed out to include trackable milestones for liquidity usage, learn to earn, etc to ensure it can be properly reviewed.

I’ll leave this to Premia to decide on if they’d like to edit the proposal. If so you can contact @lavande to gain ownership of the forum post and edit the proposal.

Hey @lavande can you grant me ownership? Thanks, I think you may have given me ownership of the comment and not the original post.

We have updated the milestone criteria to allow for a secondary option that allows for course correction and multiparty affirmation that the initiative is indeed working as intended and a if needed amendments to be made for a secondary round before the final payout is completed. We believe this will allow for all parties & community being comfortable with the progress before any large commitments are made.
Thanks!
Premia Folks

Hello @dk3 I wanted to share with you the Milestone Assessment Guidance and let you know that you have the option to make any changes to your current proposal based on the new milestone information, until Monday. After that your proposal will move to final review from the grant council members. Thank you!

oh hey @katie, thanks for the heads up! I will review this week, and update to adhere to the rubric, thanks again for looking out!

We had a question about this. What happens to any returns and OP tokens at the conclusion of this grant lifecycle? Are these tokens meant to be returned to OP governance, remain permanently in the call pool, or available for Premia’s team/governance to withdraw and spend?

If they are to remain permanently in the call pool, what mechanism or monitoring ensures this occurs?

Can you also walk us through exactly what this process looks like when they are deployed to the call pool? Are they simply being offered at some set of strike prices, or do they serve some more nuanced purpose? If they are being made available at various strike prices, how is that managed over time?

Thanks for any extra clarity to help us make sure we have a good grasp of the application!

Hello,
Our plan would be to continue to reinvest any returns back into the learn to earn program to expand the reach to more users (every 15op in returns equals 1 new user). The tokens would remain permanently in the call pool, we can set up monitoring to alert the council if you would like, or happy to draft a legal contract for the foundation if needed.

In Premia V2 (current version) the OP tokens will be deposited into the liquidity pool and be available for the entire risk book for call options. Any trading user can come in and request a strike/expiration combination and the pricing algorithm will provide them a quote given the market conditions (implied volatility & supply/demand), if the user decides to proceed with purchase the liquidity pool will take the other side of the trade and collect premiums (paid in OP tokens). Premia has oracles that continuously provide implied volatility information on chain, thus as price and volatility changes, quotes for different strikes/expirations update in perpetuity. When these underwritten options expire out of the money, the liquidity pool keeps the entire premium and that premium will be reinvested into the learn and earn program.

In Premia V3 (eta April 2023) the only difference will be instead of the entire book of risk, depositors of liquidity can be more prescribed in the exact strikes/expirations parameters they are willing to market make. There will also be a “vault” option that has feature parity to the V2 experience however. There is no plan on sunsetting V2 in the near future, so we are happy to provide a more exact strategy for approval on how these tokens would be utilized before any any changes are made in the event a migration would occur in moving OP tokens from V2 to V3.
Thanks!
DK

Premia x Socket Optimism Campaign

TL;DR

Premia has partnered with Socket and Layer3 to onboard the next generation of DeFi users to Optimism and options. Users can participate in the Socket x Premia Quest on Layer3 to learn about Socket, Optimism, and Premia while acquainting themselves with on-chain options and cross-chain bridges. Additionally users can earn time-limited NFTs and OP tokens. At the end of the event, Premia will randomly choose 2000 wallets that completed the quest to receive up to 15 OP tokens as a rebate for purchasing OP call options.

Context

Premia Finance is a decentralized options protocol that revolutionizes market-driven pricing and capital-efficient returns. We believe that DeFi should be accessible to all, and thus, part of our mission is to make it as easy as possible for anyone to get started.

In February, we published a grant proposal in the Optimism forum to onboard users from various backgrounds to DeFi options. At the time, we were building out the content and front-end for Premia Academy while working on the upcoming Premia Blue (V3) upgrade.

Shortly after, the proposal passed, providing Premia with ~200k OP tokens for onboarding new users to Optimism and DeFi options. In June, the Premia Academy was released, providing users with a platform for learning about DeFi options and the Premia platform.

Overview

In collaboration with Socket and Layer3, we’ve organized a gamified campaign that takes users through a questline of learning, bridging, and buying options. The Socket x Premia quest will be live for ~24 more hours, so check it out on Layer3 here.

The quest guides users through the following tasks:

  • Pass the “Optimism Recruit” course on the Premia Academy. Learn about Optimism, Socket, Premia, and options to obtain an NFT certificate.
  • Bridge to Optimism using the Socket bridge inside Premia’s dApp.
  • Buy an OP Call Option using Premia on Optimism.

During the campaign, Socket is offering additional bridging rebates through their separate OP Rush event. After the campaign comes to a conclusion, Premia will randomly choose 2000 eligible wallets that completed the quest to receive up to 15 OP tokens in premium rebates.

In Conclusion

With the Socket x Premia campaign, Premia hopes to foster a new wave of users to Optimism and DeFi options, while providing a landing pad for new users to learn about Optimism, Premia, Socket, and options in the Premia Academy.

In line with our mission of lending a helping hand to the next generation of DeFi natives, we look forward to collaborating with partner protocols and organizing similar events in the future.

Milestone One Update for Premia: Growth Through Education and Liquidity Provisioning

Voting Cycle Applied For: Cycle 10

Sub-committee for Review: Growth Experiment Grants

Brief Overview:

Premia, the prominent defi options platform offering OP options, has reached a significant strides aimed at lowering the barriers to options trading for both DeFi native users and traditional finance participants. Although milestones were not met based on the initial timelines set out, significant progress has been made. The academy went live in early June, with the first OP Recruit initiative taking place in mid-August.

Layer 3 Quest: Explore Premia's Options with Socket - Layer3

Academy OP Recruit Course: Premia Academy | Optimism Recruit

Milestone Achieved: Education and Onboarding

Next Steps:

  • We acknowledge we could not meet the initial timelines and the 2,000 users as part of the initial campaign. Thus, we will continue to work on novel ways to introduce ~800 new users to OP options.
  • Premia proposes to delay any further funding until we have a more comprehensive strategy to support Optimism options on Premia’s platform, potentially adding new markets or waiting until our newest update Premia Blue, supports multichain functionality.
  • Premia will continue to hold the 63,000 OP tokens in the pool, continuing to generate returns to reinvest into the program.

Upcoming Milestone:

  • Target onboarding of an additional 800 users by the end of the year. Upon completion to revisit if further funding should be explored or to sunset the program as is.

Financial Metrics:

  • The generated revenue from the initial liquidity deposit is planned for reinvestment into expanding the reach of our learn-to-earn program, with preliminary yields showing promising results.

In closing, Premia Finance remains steadfast in its commitment to demystifying options trading. We look forward to continued collaboration with the Optimism ecosystem, aiming to further penetrate the options market with informed, capable, and financially literate participants.

Please reach out with any questions,
DK

The Council is reaching out as part of its review of the milestone progress for Cycle 10 and beyond. It appears that your project has not or is not pursuing the grant proposal further at this time and the time for completion of further milestones has passed. Given that, can you please return any remaining grant distribution to the Foundation? Your project is welcome to pursue a grant proposal in the future, provided the project is in good standing, and we would welcome any update or wind down review of your project as well. We are cc’ing the Foundation to facilitate a return or any further communications, as the Foundation manages grant distribution etc. This message is being provided as a post on the forum as well as a direct communication. @dk3 @lavande
