100 days of CFC v2
CFC v2 was launched Nov 4th 2024 and will run until June 11th 2025. The CFC is intended to serve as an experimental training ground to develop a “Core Governance Program” that will allow the Collective to take on metagovernance responsibilities in the future.
100 days in, CFC v2 has been working towards this evolution of the Collective’s role in metagovernance. Season 7 so far has been about more collaborative governance design, deepening shared context, and structuring participation based on expertise for clearer, higher-impact contributions.
What the CFC has been involved in so far:
Project Partnerships → Deep dives into governance experiments & mechanisms:
This is a list of the ongoing project partnerships CFC members are currently involved in:
- Futarchy Experiment – In H1 2025, Optimism is partnering with Butter and Uniswap Foundation to test whether futarchy makes for “better” grants allocation decision than existing structures. This partnership involves CFC members testing the UI and live experiment design in order to deliver focused feedback on viability, structure and flow.
- Retro Funding Mission Metrics – An ongoing effort in refining metrics to measure impact. This project partnership is about collaborating on metric refinement and the feedback process
- Season 8 Budget Board – Helping improve financial planning for the next season
-Guest voter experiment - Active CFC participation in research, data analysis and subsequent implications for selection mechanisms for S8
Ongoing Feedback Loops → Continuous refinement of governance processes.
These are the verticals the CFC has been providing feedback on and insights into so far:
Season 7 Preview - Feedback from the CFC was useful in improving areas of communication that were unclear, confusing, or under-defined and drafts were updated to reflect these changes and clarifications as a result of CFC input.
Retrospective Guidance – CFC members helped increase clarity across from the board on Retrospectives, which helped inform S7 budgets and Charter amendments. Members across CFC tracks provided in depth feedback as exemplified here:
ACC Feedback
CoCC Feedback
DAB Feedback
SC Feedback
GC Feedback & GC Feedback
The feedback provided by the CFC will also inform updates to the Representative Structure Retrospective Template for Season 7.
Season 7 Election Candidate Profiles – Addressing the challenge of elections functioning as popularity contests by introducing data-driven profiles to help voters assess candidates based on their qualifications and contributions. Members are contributing to better answer the following questions:
- How can profiles improve transparency and informed voting?
- What data points would help delegates make better decisions?
Season 7 Operating Budget and Charter Amendment Feedback
- Aligning budget proposals with impact generated by each Council or Board
- Facilitating healthy discussions on governance costs before voting
- Evaluating whether budget increases correspond to real added responsibilities
Retro Funding Sign-Up UXR – Enhancing clarity in onboarding for builders in order to provide better support and fewer friction points in the Retro Funding process.
Impact So Far
More influence: Commission members now provide feedback earlier in the process—moving from post-design critiques to shaping governance at the planning and research stage
Increased clarity: Members now have more defined roles & responsibilities, scoped out by expertise and track, improving timelier engagement and focused insights
Higher Context: Improved connection with Foundation achieved through:
- Regular cadence of monthly CFC x Foundation meetings and internal biweekly CFC syncs
- Timelier engagement and increased lead time in involving CFC members in feedback process and project partnerships to ensure as many contributions are incorporated in experiments and specific governance design
- Leads are now attending Foundation off-sites when relevant to their role and council remits
- CFC Lead holding holding Foundation accountable and delivering CFC feedback on process and progress in real time in order to make necessary adjustments in a timely manner
CFC Success Metrics:
The success of v2 will be determined based on the following matrix used to assess progress as a programme unfolds.
-
Number of new ideas proposed and implemented as a result of Commission input (> 8)
-
% of drafts in which feedback was ranked as “high value” by the Foundation (> 70%)
-
NPS score from Foundation governance team (= > 5/7)
The below measures will be used to evaluate the success of the Foundation in managing this program:
- Member ranking of clarity of role 8.5+ (up from 7.7/10 in v1)
- Member ranking of clarity of responsibilities 9+ (up from 7.6/10 in v1)
- Member ranking of Commission efficacy 8.5+ (up from 6.9/10 in v1)
Updates on CFC work will be posted at a regular cadence to ensure the Collective is informed of the work and progress the CFC is making carrying out its mission.
