Announcing Guest Voter Participation in Season 7

In Season 7, our goal is to make significant improvements to Retro Funding to enhance its performance in accurately rewarding impact. Impact will be measured using algorithms, which are created, chosen and refined by humans. This allows us to focus human input where humans excel. This shift comes from separating Retro Funding into three distinct decisions: setting budget per mission (ratified by Citizens ahead of Season 7), selecting an evaluation algorithm, and measuring impact (which is automated via evaluation algorithm).

In order to support this shift, we need to run additional Guest Voter experiments. In Season 7, we are inviting a much larger group of the Collective’s stakeholders to participate temporarily as Guest Voters and choose the algorithm used to assess the impact of projects. This will allow us to collect voting and participation data from a much wider set of participants, which will continue to progress the development of decentralized Citizen selection. More details about the voting process is shared in a separate forum post.

What we want to learn in Season 7

In Season 7, our goal is to understand the preferences of different Collective stakeholders. Voter groups will be analyzed using both the voting data itself (how individuals cast their votes) and the preferences expressed by voters in pre-vote and post-vote surveys. In addition to identifying potential clusters or interest groups, we will also gather valuable insights on voter turnout.

Unlike in previous rounds, where the job of voters was to accurately measure impact, Season 7 invites voters to make a different type of decision — defining what constitutes impact rather than measuring it. The hypothesis is that domain expertise doesn’t play a role in the definition of impact in the way it did in rounds 5 and 6. Therefore, the Season 7 selection process strives to create a broad group of Collective stakeholders, rather than trying to select ‘for’ a specific characteristic like expertise.

Who is eligible to participate as a Guest Voter in Season 7

In Season 7, following groups are invited to participate as Guest Voters:

  • Up to 3 contributors each from the top 30 recipients of Retro Funding 4, 5 and 6 (excluding projects of community contributors, elected officials etc. who are represented in the second and third bullet)
  • Season 7 elected officials (if organizations, 1 representative), Collective Feedback Commission members
  • Community contributors above wannabe level
  • Up to 3 contributors each from eligible Superchain member organizations (those marked green or orange in the Superchain Index).

As always, participation as a Guest Voter in Season 7 is temporary and doesn’t imply the eligibility to participate in future seasons.

If you think you might be eligible to participate, set up your OP Atlas profile by February 10th. On this date, everyone who is eligible and has linked an email address to their profile will receive an automated email with further instructions.

Setting up your profile

  • Sign in to OP Atlas and follow the profile completion steps
  • Add an email address (so we can reach you)
  • Make sure you have a verified address (so we can send you a voting badge).
  • If you’re a community contributor, connect Discord
  • If you are eligible based on being a contributor to a project, the project admin must add you as a contributor in the project edit view.

Here is a walkthrough of how to complete your profile and add contributors to your project

I like the list for guest voters for this season.

Are you guys reaching out to the above to let them know they are eligible for Season 7 as a guest voter?

I think the idea of selecting different council and members of the current season as guest BadgeHolders is a better idea to get people from different professional backgrounds, but there are a couple of problems with it

  1. how to make sure that every member is notified and can attend
  2. if one person represents the committee, is his decision making personal or on behalf of the council?
  3. how to choose a guest badgeholder from the Community contributors

All in all, I think Retro funding has become more and more dynamic since the opening of the Guest Badgeholder.

yes, admins of eligible projects and all eligible individuals are being reached out to directly.

A number of those eligible to be guest voters are citizens - will we be asked to vote both as guests and as citizens, or just as one of these (and if so, will there be a difference)?

Hey @joanbp thanks for your question - Citizens cannot be Guest Voters because they are already able to vote on Retro Funding as a Citizen. The voting experience is the same for Citizens and Guest Voters.
