[Informational] Upcoming Upgrades Preview

Executive Summary

This post is for informational purposes only, and is not a formal governance proposal

This is a preview of what OP Labs plans to propose in upcoming protocol upgrade proposals. Due to the numerous features looking to be deployed, we want the Collective to be familiar with each feature before they’re proposed in a formal proposal.

Specifications

Proposed features for upcoming inclusion are:

Upgrade Proposal #13:

  • OP Contracts Manager (OPCM)
    • This proposal outlines the implementation of a new system for upgrading L1 contracts across the Superchain.
  • Fault Proofs Incident Response Improvements
    • This proposal introduces technical improvements to several key contracts to enable more flexible and less disruptive ways to respond to any potential incidents in the OP Stack fault proof system.
  • Superchain Pause Improvements
    • This proposal introduces a new Safe Module called the DeputyPauseModule to be installed into the Optimism Foundation Safe to simplify the process of quickly responding to security incidents via the Superchain-wide pause mechanism.

Upgrade Proposal #14 - Isthmus Contracts + MT-Cannon

  • MT-Cannon
    • This proposal is to upgrade Cannon, the fault proof VM (a core part of the fault proof system) to a new version that supports the MIPS-64 instruction sent and supports running multi-threaded programs, both of which remove memory constraints for the fault proof program.
  • Operator Fee L1 Contract

Upgrade Proposal #15 - Isthmus Hard Fork

  • L2 Pectra Support
    • This proposal outlines the implementation of L2 Pectra features on Isthmus as a fast follow-up to L1 Pectra deployment.
  • L2 Withdrawals Root in Block Header
    • This proposal lowers the lift for chain operators by allowing them to run a full node to operate op-dispute-monmaking it easier to guarantee the security of fault proofs for the chains in the Superchain as the number of chains scales.
  • Operator Fee
    • This proposal adds additional fee scalars to the fee formula, which allows for more flexibility for chains that leverage alt-DA, ZK proving, or custom gas tokens.

Action Plan

Following this post’s publication, links to sub-posts will be shared for each feature. These posts will be abridged versions of the full governance proposal highlighting the Exec Summary, Motivation, and Spec sections for each feature and be added as links above on an ongoing basis. In the coming weeks, official upgrade proposal will be shared encompassing all features.

We see this as a positive step forward. Congratulations on taking the initiative to provide early feedback to delegates, ensuring they don’t have to rush to stay updated once the implementation is finalized and audited. Ideally, we’d like to be informed or at least appointed to the relevant work for visibility, even during the design phase prior to be actual a proposal.
