The results of this vote did not ratify the profit definition proposed by the participants of the deliberative process experiment. That means, the Foundationā€™s fallback definition (0 past transfer deductions) will be implemented in Round 4. No deductions will be made for past transfers, focusing Round 4 entirely on impact given the complexity and nuance of defining profit, which surfaced during the deliberative process experiment and above thread.

We will conduct a full retrospective of the deliberative process experiment and share it with you all in the fall (after weā€™ve gone through a similar process for the experiments to be run in Round 5 and 6.) In the meantime, Iā€™d like to underscore what has been said above:

  • Failure to ratify does not signify the deliberative process experiment itself was a failure. Instead, it signifies that Citizensā€™ House can serve as a diligent governing body, checking decisions proposed by a smaller subset, rather than rubber stamping them. This is critical to random sampling being an effective scaling mechanism for the Citizensā€™ House and to the ability of the Citizensā€™ House to be an effective check on the Token House.
  • The deliberative process was effective in achieving some of the properties originally outlined here, such as more informed decision making and greater social cohesion.

I have personally noticed a dramatic difference in the conversation in Round 4 relative to Round 3. The above thread is an impressive demonstration of the Collectiveā€™s growing ability to productively discuss complex and controversial topics with nuance, context, focus, and civility. This is something most governance systems struggle to do.

We will continue to experiment with ways to build these skills, and to tackle the many challenging topics the Collective will need to discuss on the way to Etherā€™s Phoenix. If additional deliberative processes are considered, a Foundation Mission Request will be issued to support an open application process for potential facilitators and badgeholders will be involved earlier on to shape the process.
